My research explores the cultural dynamics of conflicts over resource extraction in Latin America. This work is based primarily on fieldwork in Peru, where I studied the emergence of conflicts that accompanied the aggressive expansion of mining activity at the turn of the 21st century. In communities surrounding the country’s largest gold mine, I examined changing forms of grassroots politics, technologies of resource extraction, and corporate practices. I have also carried out research on mining expansion and controversies over the destruction of glaciers in Chile. Some key themes that inspire my research and teaching include: the circulation of scientific and non-scientific knowledges about Nature; the politics of pollution; practices of accountability and Environmental Impact Assessment; the anthropology of water; and equivalence and incommensurability in the valuation of “resources.”
